ABOUT HES MEPHI

ABOUT HES MEPHI

NRNU MEPhI is a pioneer in the field of digital literacy education, development of smart devices, and public outreach aimed at building and developing a digital society in Russia.

With the advancement of digital technologies, employers need versatile specialists with knowledge in various fields. Modern professionals face high expectations: they must understand the latest technologies, speak foreign languages, and be able to negotiate with clients. Such versatile experts — systems engineers, digital designers, and programmers — are trained by the Higher Engineering School of NRNU MEPhI (abbreviated as HES MEPhI or HES).

Some historical background

In 2017, the Higher Engineering School (HES) opened admissions to its Master’s program, offering educational tracks delivered jointly with the Engineering Division of Rosatom State Corporation.

The purpose of establishing this program was and remains to train engineers for the digital future, as well as to set up testing grounds for new solutions in digital business. The first pilot Master’s program was aptly named “Engineers for the Digital Future”.

Five teams, each consisting of four students, tackled practical tasks from ASE (Atomstroyexport), working together with the company’s employees.

In 2019, a full‑time Master’s educational program titled “Virtual and Augmented Reality Technologies for the Design of Technological Systems” was launched at the Higher Engineering School of NRNU MEPhI (HES MEPhI), in collaboration with the research and production enterprise LLC “Interoptic”. Graduates of this program received their diplomas. Currently, there are no admissions to this program.

In 2020, a relevant and in‑demand educational program — “Digital Engineering” (field of study 09.04.02 “Information Systems and Technologies”) — was launched. It represents a synergy of engineering sciences and innovative technologies that are in high demand in high‑tech industrial sectors.

In 2021, based on the high industry demand for specialists at the intersection of IT and management, a new educational program, “Systems Engineering. Digital Technologies for Lifecycle Management”, was launched. In 2022, the program was revised according to industry feedback and relaunched as “Systems Engineering and Systems Analysis in the High‑Tech Industry”.

In 2022, the HES MEPhI project won the “Best Employment Practices” competition in the nomination “Best Practices of Support from an Educational Organization to the Workplace”.

In 2024, three digital laboratories were established at the Higher Engineering School (HES):

- the Laboratory of Digital Design and Digital Twins of Complex Engineering Facilities;

- the Laboratory of Engineering Virtual Reality;

- the Laboratory of the Industrial Internet of Things.

This enables HES students to practice reverse engineering skills, conduct research required for academic work, and deepen their knowledge in the field of digital technologies.

OUR PROGRAMS PROVIDE EDUCATION

FOCUSED ON PRACTICAL PROJECTS

Currently, admissions to the Master’s program at the Higher Engineering School of NRNU MEPhI (HES MEPhI) are open for several educational tracks. Each track focuses on digital technologies, the development of complex engineering facilities and systems, and process management in digital enterprises.

Popular modules include: systems engineering, digital platforms, machine learning, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), Building Information Modeling (BIM), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), neural networks, and artificial intelligence (AI).

Future development plans for HES MEPhI include becoming a platform for cooperation with Russian and foreign universities, as well as with technology partners, to enhance the training of engineers involved in the design, construction, and operation of complex high‑tech facilities.

In 2026, we launched a new English‑taught Master’s program titled “AI‑Augmented Digital Systems Engineering”
